Clearly OK
Grammar and spell checking. Brainstorming ideas. Outlining structure. Paraphrasing your own work for clarity. Generating first drafts that you substantially rewrite.
Gray Area
Generating content you publish under your name. Using AI for school essays (check your institution's policy). Creating marketing copy entirely with AI.
Clearly Not OK
Submitting AI text as your own in academic contexts that prohibit it. Using AI to impersonate someone. Generating fake reviews or testimonials.
The test: Would you be comfortable if your reader knew exactly how AI was involved?
